SEKIRO: SHADOWS DIE TWICE (2019)

Set in late Sengoku-era Japan, the story takes place in the fictional northern realm of Ashina. Forged through a coup led by the legendary Sword Saint, Isshin Ashina, the land now stands on the brink of ruin—plagued by Isshin’s advancing age and illness, and pressured by the overwhelming forces of the central government, the Interior Ministry. Desperate for the absolute power needed to defend his homeland, Genichiro Ashina, commander of the Ashina clan, seizes Kuro—a young boy who carries the Dragon’s Heritage, a sacred yet cursed lineage of immortality. Wolf, a shinobi sworn to Kuro, loses his left arm and his master in a fierce duel against Genichiro. Bestowed with a prosthetic mechanism known as the Shinobi Prosthetic by the Sculptor at the Dilapidated Temple, Wolf rises once more to reclaim his lord.

At its core, the narrative explores the bond between master and servant, weaving a dark tale of human karma, desire, and conflict surrounding the power of immortality.

Wolf, the protagonist, is a reticent servant raised under the strict Shinobi Code, granted a body that defies death through a sworn oath with his master. Lord Kuro, the Divine Heir of the Dragon’s Heritage, deeply fears how his blood corrupts the mortal realm, giving rise to “Dragonrot”—a tragic disease that drains the lifeforce of those around him. Determined to sever his immortal bloodline from the world forever through the ritual of “Immortal Severance,” Kuro asks for Wolf’s assistance. Conversely, Genichiro Ashina, consumed by a fierce obsession to save Ashina, ingests the Rejuvenating Waters to claim a faux-immortality, standing as the greatest obstacle in Wolf’s path. Meanwhile, Isshin Ashina, the founder of the land, watches his nation’s twilight from his deathbed; while wary of Genichiro’s reckless desperation, he subtly aids Wolf behind the scenes.

Having rescued Kuro, Wolf embarks on a quest to gather the key relics required for Immortal Severance. Obtaining the Mortal Blade—inscribed with its true name, Gracious Gift of Tears, capable of slaying immortals—from Senpou Temple, Mt. Kongo, along with the Lotus of the Palace from the Sunken Valley and the Shelter Stone from the Ashina Depths, Wolf reaches Fountainhead Palace, the origin of immortality. There, he claims the Divine Dragon’s Tears from the sacred Divine Dragon. Along his path, Wolf reunites with his foster father and shinobi master, Owl, whom he believed to be dead. However, upon discovering Owl’s ambition to claim the Dragon’s Heritage for his own self-serving ends, Wolf chooses loyalty to Kuro over the Shinobi Code, striking down his father with his own hands.

In the story’s climax, a full-scale invasion by the Interior Ministry turns Ashina Castle into a sea of flames. As Isshin succumbs to his illness, a cornered Genichiro sacrifices his own life using “Open Gate”—the black Mortal Blade—to resurrect Isshin’s soul at the peak of his strength. Set against the setting sun of Ashina’s downfall, Wolf engages in a desperate, fierce battle against Isshin resurrected from the underworld, ultimately triumphing over the legendary warrior.

In the end, Wolf and Kuro bring a final resolution to the tragic cycle of immortality. Depending on the path chosen through grim resolve, their ultimate fate is revealed: “Immortal Severance,” which severs the Dragon’s Heritage using the Divine Dragon’s Tears; “Purification,” in which Wolf sacrifices his own life to restore Kuro to a normal human; or “Dragon’s Homecoming,” where, with the aid of the Divine Child of Rejuvenating Waters in the Inner Sanctuary, the Dragon’s Heritage is returned to its birthplace in the West.
