In response to this incomprehensible and gruesome affliction, early Yharnam’s countermeasures were highly secretive. During the era of the old workshop led by Gehrman, the First Hunter, Hunters were “shadow executioners” who slipped into the darkness of the night to swiftly and secretly dispose of those who had succumbed to Beasthood; there was absolutely no glory or honor to be found in this duty. However, as Blood Ministration spread throughout Yharnam and the Healing Church’s power and congregation expanded explosively, the Scourge of the Beast reached a scale that could no longer be concealed. At this inevitable historical turning point, the figure who stepped onto the center stage of history as the first Hunter of the Healing Church, leading the masses and organizing the public “Night of the Hunt,” was none other than “Ludwig, the Holy Blade.”

This article traces the gruesome trajectory of Ludwig, who, despite being revered as the absolute hero of the Healing Church, ultimately degenerated into the most hideous beast at the lowest depths of the Hunter’s Nightmare. In contrast, Ludwig designed his weapons and Hunter attire based on an entirely different philosophy. He sought armaments that were both intimidating and cloaked in sanctity, in order to demonstrate the authority of the Healing Church to the masses and to incite the terrified citizenry. The Church Hunters he led did not wear light clothing to avoid the splattering blood of beasts; instead, they deliberately donned white garbs and heavy armor upon which bloodstains would be glaringly obvious. This was a manifestation of a fanatical spirit of self-sacrifice—a willingness to be drenched in blood and to offer themselves up to cleanse Yharnam of its disease.

This spiritual pillar is symbolized by the “Sword Hunter Badge” and the “Radiant Sword Hunter Badge.” The Sword Hunter Badge, which many players obtain by defeating the “Cleric Beast”—likely the first boss they encounter in the game—is the mark of a Church Hunter. The first step in Ludwig’s tragedy was his complete and utter belief in the doctrines of this deceitful organization, transforming himself into an unwitting killing machine in the name of justice.

Covered in blood and viscera, his spirit nearly broken amidst the screams and curses, he found a single thread of light at the bottom of the darkness. There are words that Ludwig utters when he regains his sanity in the Hunter’s Nightmare. “Aah, you were at my side, all along… My true mentor… My guiding moonlight…” As these words indicate, he revered the Holy Moonlight Sword not merely as a weapon, but as a “mentor” and “guide” that kept his sanity tethered.

This sword was imbued with extraordinary arcane power; it was an anomalous artifact capable not only of dramatically increasing the destructive power of its slashes but also of firing waves of light. Ludwig began to hallucinate thread-like manifestations of light that burned into his retinas even when he closed his eyes, discovering this as the Caryll Rune “Guidance.” He interpreted this as an “absolute guidance proving his legitimacy as a Church Hunter” from God or some greater being. The granting of the ability to increase Rally potential decisively corroborates this hypothesis. His appearance, waiting in the “Underground Corpse Pile” at the deepest part of the Hunter’s Nightmare in the DLC area The Old Hunters, retains not a shred of the hero he once was.

As an analysis of this form, the horse motif implies that he was the “packhorse” of the Healing Church, an entity forced to bear the burden of all of Yharnam’s sins, defilement, and slaughter. Furthermore, the body, which looks as if multiple limbs have fused together, is thought to be the result of his having absorbed massive amounts of the blood and grudges of the countless beasts he had hunted (who were originally innocent citizens and brethren). The countless eyeballs writhing deep in his throat are the physical manifestation of the immense Insight (proximity to the perception of the Great Ones) he accumulated as a result of clinging to “Guidance” and continuing his hunt. As a result of ingesting both blood (the Scourge of the Beast) and eyes (the madness of the Great Ones) to their absolute limits, he metamorphosed into the most hideous and powerful monstrosity in this world.

4.2 Environmental Storytelling: The Bottom of Hell

The environment of the “Underground Corpse Pile” where he is imprisoned is, true to its name, the very bottom of hell, where countless corpses form mountains and rivers of blood flow. The “truth of The Hunt” that the Healing Church had concealed—namely, the accumulated history of indiscriminately slaughtering and discarding those who showed even the slightest signs of Beasthood, or those who rebelled against the Church’s policies—is condensed in this space.

The more he tried to cleanse the blood, the more he himself became the most massive source of blood contamination. Why is Ludwig subjected to eternal suffering in the “Hunter’s Nightmare” rather than in the waking Yharnam? The reason stems from the curse of “blood intoxication” that the very existence of a Hunter bears.

The Hunters of Yharnam bathe in massive amounts of beast blood themselves in the process of hunting beasts. As can be seen from the fact that Caryll Runes are given meanings such as “Hunter” and “Blood,” the pursuit of blood is directly linked to a Hunter’s instincts. Hunters who become absorbed in the hunt and intoxicated by the pleasure of slaughter and the sweet scent of blood (Blood-drunk Hunters) are ultimately abducted and imprisoned in the “Hunter’s Nightmare” by Great Ones such as Amygdala. It is an endless, infinite hell where Hunters of the past are forced to partake in a gruesome beast hunt that will never end.

Because of his public position and absolute faith, Ludwig hunted more beasts on the front lines than anyone else, and continued to be drenched head-to-toe in more blood than anyone else. As mentioned earlier, with his Rally potential (the ability to gain vitality by bathing in blood) elevated to its absolute limit by the Caryll Rune “Guidance,” he unwittingly became the most deeply intoxicated by blood, led on by that sacred light.

His greatest sin was “the complete lack of awareness that he himself was blood-drunk and descending into madness.” He stubbornly believed without a doubt that he was an “honorable knight of a holy war.” However, from a cosmic perspective, the holy blade he wielded and the claws and fangs of beasts were no different in terms of being violence that tore apart the flesh of others. The form of absolute punishment from the cosmos against the arrogance of humans who justify their acts of slaughter with causes such as “justice” and “sanctity” is this infinite imprisonment in the corpse pile.

6. The Return of Reason and the Pinnacle of Tragedy: The Descent of “Ludwig, the Holy Blade”

The most notable, and the most tragic and beautiful moment of the Ludwig boss fight in the game, is the scene mid-battle where he discovers the “Holy Moonlight Sword” and temporarily regains his former humanity and reason.

The “Accursed Beast,” who had surrendered to madness and was merely rampaging as a beast on all fours, falls to his knees from battle damage and suddenly notices the gleam of the sword lying beside him. At that moment, the mud and blood covering the sword peel away, and the mystical glow of the moonlight illuminates the darkness of the corpse pile. “Aah, you were at my side, all along… My true mentor… My guiding moonlight…” With these words, he raises his heavy, malformed body and stands upright on two legs. Then, even while afflicted by Beasthood, he transforms into “Ludwig, the Holy Blade,” wielding the refined swordsmanship he must have once taught and guided his Hunters with, acting extremely rationally during the fight.

This phase, where the mystical light waves emitted from the sword combine with the flawlessly precise swordsmanship delivered by his overwhelming strength, instills awe and terror in the player, while simultaneously evoking a kind of sublime beauty. Gaining arcane resistance that greatly reduces all arcane damage, and firing light waves with anomalous destructive power, his figure truly evokes the resurrection of a legendary hero.

However, a terrifying philosophical question arises here. Was regaining his lost reason, even temporarily, truly a “salvation” for him?

The ultimate terror in Cosmic Horror and gothic literature is not “being killed by an unknown monster” or “losing one’s mind and succumbing to Frenzy.” It is “clearly comprehending with a sane mind the absolute truth that one is already in the midst of madness and has degenerated into an irreversibly hideous monstrosity.”

The figure of Ludwig, standing on two legs and having regained his pride as a former hero, paradoxically highlights the abnormality and hideousness of his current physical body to a cruel degree. The sacred glow of the moonlight mercilessly illuminates his festering skin, his asymmetrically sprouted malformed limbs, and the stench of countless corpses. The “guiding moonlight,” the very culprit that led him to madness and sank him into a sea of blood, ironically is the only thing that gives him back his “human dignity and reason” at the bottom of hell. This desperate contradiction is exactly what elevates Ludwig’s story from a mere boss monster subjugation into a highly dignified and decadent literary tragedy. Until the very end, he had no choice but to call the light that deceived and parasitized him “my mentor,” clinging to it as he swung his sword.

7. The Oblivion of Truth and the Deception Named “Mercy”

After Ludwig’s body collapses at the end of the mortal struggle, the final dialogue exchanged with his severed head left behind is an extremely important sequence that concludes the hidden sins and causality of this work, thrusting a heavy ethical choice upon the player (the Hunter).

7.1 Simon’s Perspective and the End of the Church

Just before expiring, Ludwig’s head musters its final ounce of strength to ask the player (a Hunter wearing Church attire): ”…Tell me, good hunter of the Church. Have you seen the light? Are my Church hunters the honorable spartans I hoped they would be?”

In response to this question, Simon the Harrowed, a Hunter investigating the dark secrets of the Healing Church, mutters while looking down at Ludwig’s tragic state: “He never wanted to know what it really was. Truly, he didn’t.” Simon knows everything. That the Healing Church is already completely corrupt and has collapsed. The truth that the Church Hunters, far from being honorable swords, are slaughterers swallowed by madness, or have themselves degenerated into beasts. And that the light Ludwig believed in was an utter fabrication.

7.2 The Ultimate Choice and the Philosophy of Faith

The player is forced to make a choice in response to Ludwig’s heartbreaking question: to lie and say “Yes” (they are the honorable swords you hoped for), or to tell the cruel truth and say “No.”

Sometimes, “beautiful lies” and “deception” can be the only mercy in a dark world filled with despair. Even a player who hates the Healing Church for concealing the truth can, for this moment alone, grant a false peace to the blind hero who was simultaneously the Church’s greatest victim and its greatest perpetrator. This “salvation through words” can be said to be the act that paradoxically shows the strongest remnants of “Humanity” amidst the blood-soaked beast hunt.

Conclusion: A Test Subject Named Hero and the Pinnacle of Cosmic Horror

To summarize the life of Ludwig, the Holy Blade, he was a man far too pure, who martyred himself to a “curse named a righteous cause.” While the old Hunter Gehrman continued the practical business of secret executions in the darkness, tormented by his own guilt, Ludwig offered himself on the altar in the light, as a symbol of hope to guide the people.

However, the “light” he believed in was not divine guidance, but the merciless lure of the Great Ones lurking in the abyss of the cosmos. The “Holy Blade” he championed, far from purging the defilement of blood, became a catalyst to drag him into an even greater sea of blood and transform him into the most hideous beast. The organization of “honorable Church Hunters” he built ultimately played a part in sinking all of Yharnam into indiscriminate slaughter and blood-crazed madness, expanding the Scourge of the Beast to an uncontrollable scale.

The Healing Church used Blood Ministration with the ultimate goal of human evolution (gaining eyes, approaching the Great Ones). At its root lies the arrogant eugenics peculiar to the Victorian era: the belief that “even cosmic truth can be controlled and utilized through human intellect and faith.” Ludwig was the most faithful executor of that ideology, and at the same time, he was nothing more than the “honorable first test subject” in a massive human experiment.

At the lowest depths of the Hunter’s Nightmare, at the bottom of hell where countless corpses and rivers of blood flow, Ludwig fell asleep clinging to false honor, reduced to nothing but a severed head. His existence is an extremely cruel yet beautiful monument demonstrating how petty and self-satisfying the illusions of “faith” and “heroism” are within the Cosmic Horror-filled world of Bloodborne. In the dark history of Yharnam, colored by blood and madness, no one harbored goodwill and justice as purely as he did, and consequently, no one suffered a more gruesome hell. The moonlight certainly guided him. However, its destination was not a glorious heaven, but a bottomless abyss where human dignity is literally dismantled. We can only hope that the final dream he saw was, at the very least, enveloped in gentle moonlight.
