Chapter.00: Synopsis

DEATH STRANDING (2019)

The narrative is set in a North America physically and psychologically fractured by an unprecedented cataclysm known as the “Death Stranding.” As the realms of the living and the dead (the “Beach”) collide, “Timefall”—a rain that rapidly ages everything it touches—falls continuously, while invisible spectral entities known as “BTs” (Beached Things) roam the post-apocalyptic world. If a living person is consumed by a BT, it triggers a catastrophic explosion known as a “voidout.” Forced into isolation within underground shelters, humanity suffers as the nation’s infrastructure lies completely collapsed.

The protagonist, Sam Porter Bridges, is a legendary porter endowed with the unique ability of a “Repatriate”—capable of returning his soul to his physical body from the boundary of death, known as the “Seam.” After witnessing the death of his adoptive mother, President Bridget Strand—who fought to rebuild America—Sam learns that his adoptive sister Amelie, the designated next president, has been taken captive by terrorists on the West Coast. He reluctantly accepts a grueling mission: to rescue Amelie and reconnect the fractured cities via the “Chiral Network.” Along the way, Sam travels with “Lou,” a “BB” (Bridge Baby) designed to detect BTs. Though BBs are officially treated as mere tools, Sam gradually develops a profound, emotional bond akin to that of a parent and child.

Supported by allies such as Fragile and Deadman, Sam confronts Higgs, leader of the separatist group Homo Demens, as well as Cliff, a mysterious man haunting ghostly battlefields. Through these encounters, a tragic past comes to light: Cliff was actually Sam’s biological father. Years ago, Cliff was killed while trying to rescue the infant Sam—who had been turned into the very first BB test subject. When the baby died in the struggle, Amelie (the soul of Bridget) revived Sam on her Beach, turning him into a Repatriate. This act of disturbing the boundary between life and death was a crucial trigger that sealed the fate of the Death Stranding phenomenon.

At the narrative’s core lies the revelation that Amelie is an “Extinction Entity” (EE)—a high-dimensional entity destined to bring about the total annihilation of all life on Earth. Tormented by her fate, she sought to accelerate the inevitable “Last Stranding” to end humanity’s suffering. Rather than rejecting her with gunfire, Sam discards his weapon and offers her an embrace, persuading her to postpone the extinction. As Amelie chooses to sever her tie to the world and remain forever isolated on her Beach, Sam bids her farewell. Returning to the living world, he risks everything to save Lou from being incinerated after her service ended. Removing his handcuff-shaped terminal (Cuff Link), the symbol of the UCA (United Cities of America), Sam breaks away from the system. Once a man plagued by aphenphosmphobia—a fear of physical contact and connection—Sam willfully chooses a bond with a single tiny life, stepping forward into a sunlit world as the rain ceases. The first game centers on “reconnection from isolation,” brilliantly shifting its focus from a macro-level connection of the state to a micro-level affection between individuals.

DEATH STRANDING 2: ON THE BEACH (2025)

Several years after the events of the first game, Sam, having departed from the UCA, lives a peaceful, secluded life in the wasteland near the former US-Mexico border alongside the growing Lou. However, Fragile, now leading the private network organization “Drawbridge,” appears to enlist Sam’s help. She asks him to look beyond the UCA’s framework and expand the Chiral Network to other continents, including Mexico. Shortly thereafter, their hideout is attacked by a mysterious armed group. Fragile suffers fatal injuries in the tragic assault, and Lou—Sam’s ultimate beacon of hope—is seemingly killed, plunging Sam back into the depths of grief and despair.

Traumatized by the loss of Lou, Sam boards the mobile vessel “DHV Magellan” to confront the curse of being a Repatriate who cannot even grant himself the relief of death. Alongside new companions such as Dollman and Rainy, as well as a mysterious young woman named “Tomorrow,” he sets out once more on a journey to connect the world. By linking various regions to the network, massive spatial teleportation portals called “Plate Gates” are unlocked, enabling connectivity across multiple continents, including Australia. As Sam traverses these lands, he comes face-to-face with APAS—an organization seeking to sequester humanity on the Beach to escape extinction—and his resurrected nemesis, Higgs.

In the story’s climax, shocking truths emerge that shake Sam’s identity and the very foundation of the world. It is revealed that Higgs was the mastermind behind the assault, intending to trigger the Last Stranding and annihilate all existence. Furthermore, Lou, thought to have been killed, is actually alive—her soul had been transported to the Beach of the late Neil Vana. Within a chrysaloid shell on the Beach, where time flows differently, Lou matured rapidly and grew into “Tomorrow,” the very woman who had been traveling alongside Sam. Most crucially, Lou was never just an ordinary BB test subject; she was Sam’s biological daughter (BB-00), conceived with his late wife Lucy, who was believed to have died in a voidout.

In the final showdown on the Beach, Sam defeats Higgs and thwarts the Last Stranding. Though he successfully rescues the grown Lou (Tomorrow), he must bid a tragic final farewell to Fragile, who had actually lost her physical body during the initial attack and remained in the living world solely as a spirit. Whereas the first game depicted a spatial “reconnection from division,” the sequel explores the temporal and psychological acceptance of “loss and the death of loved ones.” As the Timefall clears and green foliage sprouts anew, Tomorrow inherits Fragile’s legacy and gear. With Sam accepting both his past losses and his future through his daughter, the narrative reaches a poignant, peaceful conclusion.
