The magnificent cities once built by humanity have been ruthlessly weathered by the violent acceleration of entropy, their remains standing silently, covered in moss that praises a desolate beauty.

This report is an exploration to unravel the “truth” lying in the abyss of this silence-shrouded world. From the perspective of a lore scholar restoring the world’s truth and a historical archivist of the United Cities of America, this paper meticulously constructs logic from the vast remaining records, fragmentary holograms, and scientific and literary metaphors. It examines the metaphysical structure of the “Beach,” which is the core of the phenomenon, the mythological interpretation of “entropy” hidden within it, and the merits and demerits of the “Chiral Network” constructed utilizing its unique laws.

What is told here is not a mere record of restoring communication infrastructure. Beyond the Beach lies “The Seam,” a realm of the dead where the living can never tread, and further in its depths spreads a pitch-black ocean called “Tar.” This Tar is an unidentified dark matter that began to well up across the world after the DS phenomenon; it not only serves as a medium for Voidouts but also contains the memories of past Extinction Entities and ancient organisms. In the creation myth of ancient Egyptian mythology, the world was born from a chaotic primeval ocean called “Nun,” and everything is said to return there. The Beach and the Tar can be said to be the very physical manifestations of this mythological structure.

As a matter of fact, it has been confirmed that the shape of a Beach and the time flowing within it strongly depend on the psychological state, past traumas, and ideology of its owner. The testimony that Cliff’s battlefield remained fixed for decades, and that Higgs Monaghan felt he spent “time equivalent to thousands of years” on Amelie’s Beach, proves that time on the Beach does not depend on the hands of an objective clock, but is bound by the subjective gravity perceived by the individual’s “Ka” (soul). As the price for the irreversible cessation of time on the Beach, the collapse of life is extremely accelerated in physical space.

Just as time slows down extremely at the event horizon of a massive black hole, the Beach as a singularity compresses time, and the surplus energy overflowing from its gravitational sphere pours down as Timefall. This is a phenomenon that should be called the “immune response of the universe,” akin to a scream, as the cosmic order deranged by the DS phenomenon desperately tries to balance the books overall.

3. The Chiral Network and Symmetry Breaking: The Light and Shadow of Mythological Technology

While Timefall robbed humanity of the surface and drove people into isolated lives in underground shelters, humanity utilized the byproduct of this DS phenomenon to achieve an unprecedented technological leap. That is the “Chiral Network.”

The Chiral Network is fundamentally different from the internet or fiber-optic communications of the past. This system, which controls Chiralium via a special computational device called a Q-pid to construct a vast network, utilizes the “Beach” as a data transmission route. Because the Beach possesses the characteristic that “time does not exist (or is infinitely delayed),” transmitting and receiving information through this space enables “zero-time instantaneous communication” that completely ignores the constraints of physical distance and time. Furthermore, it became possible to instantaneously share massive amounts of data and even blueprints of objects, materializing them immediately at remote locations using chiral printers.

When the Chiral Network covered the entire United States, she was advancing a plan to forcibly integrate and fuse “the Beaches of all Americans” into her own “EE Beach” via the network. Once this integration was complete, inexhaustible antimatter would avalanche into the real world from The Seam of all Beaches, filling the surface with countless BTs, and triggering the “Last Stranding,” which would cause the world to undergo a Voidout in an instant. In other words, the communication network that was supposed to save humanity was itself the circuit diagram for a massive “extinction weapon” that would trigger a cosmological reset on par with the Big Bang.

4. The Philosophy of Kobo Abe: The Merits and Demerits of Hyper-Connection (SNS) and the Existential Crisis

“The rope and the stick are two of mankind’s oldest tools. The stick is for keeping evil at bay, the rope is for pulling good toward us.” This literary metaphor by Kobo Abe, which permeates the foundation of the original Death Stranding and inspired Director Hideo Kojima, is thrust upon the player and Sam Porter Bridges in an extremely cruel manner as the story progresses.

4.1 [Fact] The Violence of the “Rope” and the Dissolution of Existence

Sam’s journey in the original DS was an act of throwing the “Rope” once again into a divided world and connecting people. However, as revealed as lore information, the increase in the concentration of Chiralium in the atmosphere has a severe side effect of causing intense self-destructive urges (suicidal ideation) and nightmares in people. The more the network was connected, the higher the chiral concentration rose, and ironically, people’s minds were undermined.

The metaphysical causality behind this phenomenon can be considered an extremely elaborate metaphor for the psychopathology brought about by “hyper-connection” in modern SNS society. Being constantly connected to the vast information, emotions, traumas, and memories of death (Tar) of others without a psychological boundary (Stick) easily collapses human ego (existence).

Just as post-Cold War globalization harbored the arrogant illusion that “economic connection brings democracy and peace,” the United Cities of America also fell into the blind faith that “humanity will be saved if connected by a network.” However, in a world where absolute boundaries with others do not exist, the outline of the self melts away, eventually being sucked into the void. The suicidal urges caused by Chiralium are the screams of minds that can no longer distinguish between “self” and “other” due to hyper-connection, attempting to sever themselves from the world. The “integration of all Beaches (Last Stranding)” attempted by Amelie is nothing less than the ultimate form of ruin (totalitarian extinction) reached by this “hyper-connection.”

5. “Drawbridge” and Magellan: Evolutionary Redefinition and Resistance to Extinction

In Death Stranding 2: On the Beach (DS2), the story expands beyond the framework of rebuilding the American continent into unknown territories, including the Australian continent. In this new era, humanity will fundamentally redefine the concept of “connection.”

5.1 [Fact] Drawbridge and the DHV Magellan

Departing from the assimilation policies of the United Cities of America, Fragile and Sam begin their activities as a civilian support organization, “Drawbridge.” Their means of transport is a massive Deep-Tar Hunting Vessel called the “DHV Magellan.” Bearing the name of Ferdinand Magellan, the explorer who once circumnavigated the globe, this mobile base is not a mere vehicle. What is noteworthy is that this ship has the function of instantaneously fast-traveling to various parts of the vast Australian continent by diving into the sea of Tar (the sediment of the memories of the dead and entropy) and deciphering its currents. Steered by Tarman and supported by a unique crew including Dollman, this ship is truly a modern ark navigating the world of the dead.

5.2 [Theory] The Acquisition of the “Stick” and the Evolution to Ride the Sea of Tar

The very organizational name “Drawbridge” presents an evolutionary answer to Kobo Abe’s philosophy. A drawbridge becomes a “Rope (path)” to connect with others when lowered, and a “Stick (wall)” to physically block threats when raised. Reflecting on the pre-human error of inviting the crisis of extinction (Last Stranding) as a result of uncritically connecting everything, they have reclaimed the active right to choose “who to connect with, and who to put a stick between.” This is also symbolized by the fact that the new Q-pid in DS2 is equipped with a mechanism to choose to turn connections on or off, not just “connecting,” but “severing the network to repel the threat of BTs (or vice versa).”

Furthermore, the fact that the DHV Magellan navigates the “sea of Tar” signifies a paradigm shift for humanity. Tar is no longer a symbol of death to be avoided, but a “new nature” to be explored and utilized. Humanity has moved past the stage of merely fearing the DS phenomenon, unraveling its laws, and stepping into a phase of robust evolution as intelligent life forms, navigating (hunting) the abyss of entropy by their own will.

Conclusion: The Curse of Connection and the Beautiful Resistance to Extinction Beyond It

The “Beach” was a beautiful yet cruel projection of the mind, born from the “fear of death and mourning” acquired by humanity. And the “Chiral Network” is a forbidden technology that exploited its unique temporal structure to drive humanity toward rapid evolution (or extinction). The violent acceleration of entropy brought about by Timefall can be said to be a cold declaration from the universe that we can never escape the providence of nature (aging and death) that we should inherently accept.

However, what echoes in this desolate world is not only the futility of despair. The sorrow borne by Bridget and Amelie as the Extinction Entity (EE) was a form of love from a small god, who resisted the mighty fate of a cosmic reset and tried to sustain the beloved species of humanity for even one day longer.

The era of the “Rope,” which unconditionally connected everything and melted one’s own existence, has come to an end. We humanity now hold the “Stick (Drawbridge)” to control connections and defend ourselves, and have found a way (Magellan) to cross the deep sea of Tar. The Sixth Extinction (Last Stranding) has merely been narrowly postponed, and the myth of increasing entropy has not ended. Sooner or later, at the end of the evolutionary cycle, extinction will come.

But to choose the form of that demise ourselves, to grasp one rope and one stick, and to keep walking for even one day longer, even while smeared in mud. That is the only existential resistance for us to remain “humanity (Homo faber: man the maker)” in this world where the boundaries between life and death have ambiguously melted together.
