Code.08: Hacking Vision and the Body
Color as Code and the Liberation of Kung Fu
In the world of The Matrix, every color projected on the screen, the shape of props, the reflection of light, and even the dynamic movements of the physical body function as highly calculated “codes.”
To shatter the absolute logic constructed by The Architect, one must not only free their mind but also hack the very rules of vision and body that constitute this world. In this chapter, we will decode the depths of the system through two approaches: the ontological hierarchy woven by color and light, and the liberation of the body through “martial arts (Kung Fu)” in virtual space.
The Three Colors Defining Existence (Green, Blue, and Gold)
The worldview of this work visually defines the ontology of space—“Mind, Body, and Spirit”—through color grading.
The virtual reality inside The Matrix is consistently depicted through a sickly green filter. This space, where everything from the sky and buildings to the shadows on people’s skin is submerged in green, visualizes the fluorescent hue of old monochrome monitors, serving to subconsciously imprint that this world is a “constructed program.” From the perspective of Gnosticism, this unnatural green world is a cage of “corruption” and “disease” (the realm of the Mind) created by the false god (Demiurge) to imprison the human spirit.
In contrast, the real world where Neo awakens is depicted with a chilling blue as its base tone. The Earth, covered in dark clouds to block out sunlight, has turned into an icy wasteland devoid of the breath of life. This blue lighting symbolizes the coldness of physical reality (the realm of the Body), full of pain and cold, faced by the atrophied flesh that was connected to a Plug. However, in the deep underground city of Zion, blue and green are eliminated, and warm colors reminiscent of torch flames and geothermal heat dominate the screen. The sight of people’s bodies, covered in mud and sweat, pulsating in the reddish light is a symbol of human “heat” and “vitality” against the inorganic logic of the machines.
Then, appearing towards the end of the story, is the “golden light.” Neo, blinded after his eyes are burned by Agent Smith in the real world, begins to see a radiant golden world in the darkness. This light, which forms the panoramic view of the Machine City and the very program of Agent Smith, is the manifestation of the universe’s fundamental information (the realm of the Spirit). This spiritual vision, which directly perceives the true form of all things without passing through the filters of physical sensory organs, overcomes the opposition between green and blue, serving as visual proof that the system has reached true Synthesis.
The Deconstruction of the RSI and the Melting of the Mirror
In the virtual world, the human form is not a physical body but a digital mental projection called the “Residual Self Image (RSI).” As visual devices to shatter this fictitious ego, “mirrors” and “reflections” play a crucial role.
There is a scene where, next to Neo who has taken the Red pill, a cracked mirror self-repairs, liquefies, and swallows his entire body. According to psychologist Jacques Lacan, infants form a fictitious ego by seeing their unified image reflected in a mirror, but the liquefying mirror in The Matrix brilliantly subverts this “Mirror stage.” The phenomenon of the mirror losing its solid boundaries and swallowing Neo depicts the psychoanalytic process in which the illusion of the RSI dissolves, and the sensation of his cold flesh connected to tubes in a Pod feeds back into his consciousness.
Furthermore, the metaphor of reflection is elevated to a Buddhist state of mind through the “bending spoon.” The telekinetic boy in the waiting room of The Oracle preaches, “There is no spoon.” Inside The Matrix, matter does not exist; there is only the source code rendering the environment. Only by discarding the dualistic illusion that the Self and the object exist independently, and realizing that “it is not the spoon that bends, it is only yourself,” can one hack the physical laws of the system. The depiction of Neo’s face distorting on the curved reflective surface of the spoon is a sophisticated code indicating that the transformation of the object is, in fact, the transformation of one’s own consciousness.
The Liberation of the Body and Kung Fu as Phenomenology
The rebels, having rewritten their cognitive frameworks, exhibit superhuman powers that defy physical laws in virtual space. Just as Trinity, clad in a black PVC suit, employs fluid and highly lethal martial arts (Kung Fu), combat becomes a “weapon of resistance” against the system.
Martial arts in The Matrix are not merely a means of violence, but the practice of “understanding the other through corporeality” in phenomenology. The prime example of this is Seraph, the guardian of The Oracle, who always demands a martial arts bout from those seeking an audience, stating, “You do not truly know someone until you fight them.”
In virtual space, language (dialogue) and appearance are nothing more than superficial data (fake code) that can be easily disguised. However, in the extreme exchange of physical and mental data known as “combat,” the algorithm and the strength of will existing at the core of the subject are exposed without noise. In the process of parrying strikes, synchronizing, and counterattacking, the boundary between the Self and the other temporarily melts, and their existential significance synchronizes. The liberation of the body through Kung Fu is the ultimate hack that rewrites the deterministic codes of gravity and speed, while simultaneously establishing “true communication (direct data connection)” in a Simulation society.
The Panopticon of the Gaze and Biblical Codes
The sunglasses worn by the characters also define the power structure through the gaze. The uniform, rectangular sunglasses of the Agents indicate that they are emotionless algorithms, inorganically reflecting only the terrified figures of their opponents. This is the embodiment of the “Panopticon,” creating a unilateral asymmetry of the gaze between the watcher and the watched.
On the other hand, the sunglasses of the rebels are shields to protect the eyes that discern the truth from a false reality. There is a scene where Morpheus’s pince-nez reflects “Neo reaching for the Red pill” in the right lens and “Neo sitting with the Blue pill” in the left lens separately. This physically impossible, distorted reflection is the pinnacle of visual philosophy, fixing the “divergence of choice” by Free will and the “duality” of humanity within a single frame.
Furthermore, biblical words are engraved as hidden codes within the system. The license plate “IS 5416” on the Audi driven by Agent Smith explicitly states the fatalism of Isaiah 54:16, “I have created the destroyer to wreak havoc.” The inscription “Mark III No. 11” on the Nebuchadnezzar of Morpheus prophesies the manifestation of The One in the Gospel of Mark. The fact that human myths and religious unconsciousness are recursively written as environmental data, even under absolute digital control, is a code indicating the limits of the system—that the absurd history of human existence inevitably had to be incorporated even into the pure logic of The Architect.
The rebels deconstruct the Simulacrum that deceives their vision and close in on the truth through the clash of data via their bodies. At the forefront of this, the entity who most radically and beautifully destroyed the Causality of the system is Trinity, who will be discussed in the next chapter.
