Code.04: The Conflict Between Prophecy and Causality

The Board Set by The Oracle and The Merovingian

The “perfect mathematical equation” constructed by The Architect was an absolute framework that governed the world of The Matrix from a macroscopic perspective. However, within this colossal system exist two polar opposite governing principles, writhing in a microscopic dimension that is either invisible to The Architect or beyond his capacity to calculate.

One is The Merovingian, the king of the underworld, who reduces all phenomena to a “chain of cause and effect” and manipulates physical desires. The other is the maternal prophet, The Oracle, who introduces the illogical variables of “intuition” and “love” into the system, betting on the possibility of Free will. This chapter will unravel the fierce conflict between Causality and prophecy that was secretly unfolding within the prison of Determinism.

The King of the Underworld and the Chains of Causality

If The Architect embodies the “mind (thought)” of The Matrix, The Merovingian is the entity that embodies its “gut (intestines).” He does not engage in macroscopic calculations; instead, he rules over the sordid network of microscopic individual desires, information, violence, and pleasure. Referred to by The Oracle as “one of the oldest programs,” his true identity is the kingpin of the Exiles who have survived from previous systems.

His name, “The Merovingian,” derives from the historical Merovingian dynasty, which ruled the Frankish Kingdom from the 5th to the 8th century before eventually being stripped of real power and expunged from history. This historical background perfectly encrypts his existential standpoint. He once reigned as the core (king) of The Matrix, but was ousted from his throne by a superior intuitive program (The Oracle), becoming a refugee (an obsolete OS) lurking in the underworld of the virtual space. His behavior—favoring the French language and reveling in a luxurious lifestyle, claiming that “cursing in French is like wiping your ass with silk”—is the very decadence of an absolute monarch who has lost his former glory.

His domain is the “underworld,” constructed through Greek mythology and Christian metaphors. The nightclub “Club Hel,” which serves as their stronghold, bears a name that combines the underworld of Norse mythology with the Christian Hell, creating a space ruled by desire and violence. Furthermore, the name of his wife, “Persephone,” originates from the goddess of rebirth and the underworld who was abducted by Hades, the king of the underworld.

The most symbolic representation of The Merovingian’s philosophy is the hacking of the “chocolate cake” in a high-end restaurant. He sends a slice of cake, which is a “malicious executable file” written by himself, to a beautiful female patron sitting at a distance. The moment the woman puts the cake in her mouth, the code forcibly rewrites the physiological responses of her simulated body, leading her to an irresistible sexual arousal.

This process is a perfect demonstration of his assertion that “the only truth in the universe is Causality. Action, reaction. Cause and effect.” Through this act, he showed Neo and the others the nihilistic truth that even human consciousness and emotions are nothing more than biochemical algorithms, and that “choice is an illusion created between those with power and those without.” In a deterministic universe where only cause and effect exist, the only certain “realization of power” is to become the cause oneself and elicit the predicted effect from others.

The Intuitive Program and the Introduction of “Choice”

It was The Oracle who mocked this absolute Causality and brought unpredictable chaos (fluctuation) to the world. If The Architect is the “father (pure logic)” of The Matrix, The Oracle was its “mother (intuition and choice).” If The Architect’s purpose is to “balance the equation,” The Oracle’s purpose is to “unbalance the equation.”

In light of the mythological system of Gnosticism, while The Architect is the Demiurge who constructed the false material world, The Oracle functions as the archetype of “Sophia,” who fell from the Empyrean and guides humanity, trapped in the material world, toward spiritual awakening (gnosis).

What makes the existence of The Oracle philosophically unique is the “conflict between Determinism and Free will” that she thrusts upon humans. Above the entrance to her kitchen hangs the Latin translation of the maxim inscribed at the Oracle of Delphi in ancient Greece: “Temet Nosce.” Just as real-life priestesses did, she does not convey the facts of the future exactly as they are. She peers into the inner self of the questioner and gives them only the words they “need to hear right now.”

When Neo asked whether he was The One, she told him, “You’re waiting for something. Your next life, maybe.” This was a maieutic method designed to reflect Neo’s internal state of “not yet fully believing himself to be The One” and to encourage his own self-exploration. She did not forcefully instill the knowledge that “you are The One,” but rather guided him to voluntarily undergo the process of “Temet Nosce.” Had she told him the truth directly, Neo would have been bound by the system of fate and would never have chosen voluntary self-sacrifice.

The “red candy” and “freshly baked cookies” offered by The Oracle are also crucial cybernetic codes that contrast with The Merovingian’s chocolate cake. While The Merovingian used the cake (malware) to forcibly control the emotions of others, the cookies given by The Oracle were codes acting as “nourishment” to draw out the subject’s inherent potential and assist in self-realization. Through the same act of “eating (downloading data),” the decisive opposition between the Determinism of machines and the acceptance of Free will is depicted.

The Algorithm of “Upaya” and Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

The Oracle and The Merovingian harbor a fierce mutual hatred. For The Merovingian, who can only deductively derive effects from past causes, The Oracle’s intuition, which foresees the uncertainty of the future, is nothing but an eyesore of a bug that threatens his power. He is obsessed with taking the eyes of The Oracle, but her eyes possess a nature where they “can never be taken by force; they can only be given voluntarily by her.”

The greatest weapon The Oracle used to sever the chains of Causality was the philosophy of “Upaya” in Mahayana Buddhism. Upaya in Buddhism is a concept that affirms the use of temporary, provisional teachings (lies or metaphors) tailored to the listener’s level of understanding in order to guide sentient beings toward enlightenment.

The original function of “The One” designed by The Architect was to rebuild Zion based on a “Universal love” for all of humanity. However, to intentionally break this equation, The Oracle introduces a bug into the system: an “attachment to a specific individual (Exclusive love)” rather than to humanity as a whole.

She gave Trinity a prophecy: “The man you love will be The One.” As a result, Trinity unconsciously begins to risk her own life to protect Neo. Furthermore, by telling Neo, “You are not The One,” she liberated him from the heavy burden of destiny, drawing out his voluntary self-sacrifice to protect the one he loves.

The “prophecies” spoken by The Oracle are not objective descriptions of a fixed future, but rather algorithms of “self-fulfilling prophecy” designed to actively bring about a specific, desirable future. While The Architect attempted to control humanity with mathematical equations, The Oracle utilized the highly illogical and passionate emotion of “love” as a programmable variable, breaking through the logical limits of Determinism.

The Fate of Double Destiny

The brand of cigarettes The Oracle is always smoking is “Double Destiny.” This name implies the intertwined destiny of the opposing species—humans and machines—toward a shared future, while simultaneously suggesting the duality of Determinism and Free will. Moreover, the amorphous visual representation of cigarette “smoke” itself is a manifestation of “intuition and chaos,” positioned at the opposite pole of the rigid green Digital Rain (Determinism). Even in a world where everything is calculated, the future constantly wavers like smoke, containing countless possibilities.

The Merovingian, drowning in Causality and flaunting his power, eventually invites his wife’s betrayal through the boomerang of cause and effect he himself set in motion, heading toward his downfall. His underworld collapses by the very power of choice that he mocked as an “illusion.”

On the other hand, The Oracle, who bet on the uncertainty of the future, was preparing a further “drastic measure” to dismantle the system. What she unleashed onto the board was not only Neo, awakened by love. Involving even the programs of the old world, the story plunges into its next phase, revolving around the existence of “those without purpose” and “those trapped in fanaticism.”
