Diablo IV (2023)

Set in Sanctuary—a world forged by the archangel Inarius and the demon Lilith—this narrative depicts the collapse of cosmic dualism and humanity’s painful struggle toward self-determination. The tale opens with the resurrection of Lilith, the “Daughter of Hatred” and Mother of Sanctuary, following her long banishment. Summoned by Elias, a fanatical former Horadric scholar, Lilith’s true ambition is to permanently liberate Sanctuary from both the tyrannical rule of the High Heavens and the endless war waged by the Burning Hells, including the Prime Evils (Diablo, Baal, and Mephisto). However, the “liberation” she brings demands the abandonment of moral law, unleashing the rawest impulses of desire and violence slumbering within human hearts. Across the realm, she spreads a bloody dogma of survival of the fittest, seeking to cull the weak and forge those with strong Nephalem blood into a formidable army under her command.

The player, known as “The Wanderer,” becomes spiritually tethered to Lilith after being force-fed her blood by madness-stricken villagers in a blizzard-swept frontier settlement. Bound to her through visions triggered by blood petals, the Wanderer embarks on a perilous quest to track Lilith down. They are joined by Lorath, an aging scholar and one of the last Horadrim; Donan, a man tormented by past sins and regret; and Neyrelle, a brilliant young scholar mourning the death of her mother. Their journey mercilessly lays bare the helplessness of humanity and the cruelty of fate in Sanctuary—most tragically manifested when Donan’s beloved son, Yorin, is possessed and gruesomely slain by the demon Astaroth. Meanwhile, Inarius, Sanctuary’s co-creator, leads the Cathedral of Light in a holy war against Lilith. Yet his true motive is entirely selfish—a desperate bid to earn his redemption and return to the High Heavens—devoid of any genuine compassion for mankind. In a climactic clash at the Gates of Hell, Inarius falls to Lilith, shattering the illusion of the Light as an absolute beacon of good.

Lilith then invades the domain of her weakened and bound father, Mephisto, the “Lord of Hatred,” scheming to absorb his power and become an absolute being. Cunning as ever, Mephisto appears before the Wanderer in the guise of a spectral wolf, offering guidance to subtly manipulate them into eliminating his patricidal daughter. In the campaign’s ultimate moment, Neyrelle is forced to make a agonizing choice: seal Lilith or seal Mephisto. Recognizing Mephisto as the more insidious and fundamental threat, she chooses to bind the Lord of Hatred within a Soulstone rather than target the immediate danger posed by Lilith. The Wanderer then confronts Lilith and, after a harrowing battle, slays her. As she dies, Lilith utters a chilling prophecy: without her to stand against the legions of Hell, Sanctuary has no future. Though the battle is won, true peace eludes the realm. Fully aware of the Soulstone’s sinister corruptive force, Neyrelle vanishes into the unknown with the artifact, leaving behind only a letter so as not to endanger her companions. Thus, the main story draws to a close—a fragile blend of lingering doom, tragic emptiness, and a faint glimmer of hope.

DLC: Vessel of Hatred (2024)

Continuing from the grim aftermath of the main story, this narrative follows the journey of young scholar Neyrelle, who has embarked on a solitary flight while carrying the Soulstone bound with Mephisto, acting as a reluctant “Vessel of Hatred.” The setting shifts to Nahantu, a vast southern jungle region home to Kurast—once the heartland of the Zakarum faith, now swallowed by centuries of corruption and rot. Neyrelle’s goal is to find ancient wisdom capable of permanently cleansing or sealing the Soulstone. However, the malevolent power of Mephisto easily pierces the physical shell of the Horadric artifact, insidiously corroding Neyrelle’s mind and body. In her wake, a miasma of hatred spreads like a physical contagion, twisting Nahantu’s wilderness into a hive of monstrosities and driving the local tribes into madness and fratricidal slaughter.

Journeying into Nahantu to save Neyrelle, the Wanderer allies with Eru, a warrior of the Spiritborn—the jungle’s holy guardians. Guided by spirit guardians of the Jaguar, Gorilla, Eagle, and Centipede, the Wanderer follows the trail of Akarat, the founder of the Zakarum faith who once banished darkness with holy light. It is believed that Akarat’s sacred tomb holds the last hope to contain Mephisto’s hatred. Along the way, Neyrelle suffers unrelenting mental torture inflicted by Mephisto’s illusions. Haunting visions of her mother’s tragic death and terrifying glimpses of the ruin wrought by her own choices push her to the brink of madness. Masterfully, Mephisto twists even her noble desire to save the world and her spirit of self-sacrifice into fuel for despair and malice.

In the climax, the Wanderer and Eru confront Mephisto’s encroaching power as it seeks to fully materialize in the Spirit Realm. Just as Neyrelle is on the verge of breaking beneath his terrifying will, the pristine spirit of Akarat manifests. Sacrificing his very existence, Akarat collides directly with the torrent of Mephisto’s hatred, narrowly thwarting the Prime Evil’s full resurrection into the mortal realm. Yet, this is no true victory, but a harrowing reprieve. The ultimate symbol of Sanctuary’s hope is consumed, while deep within the shadows, the menacing manifestation of Mephisto’s rebirth—a Harbinger of Hatred—stirs. Overwhelmed with grief and remorse for Akarat’s sacrifice, Neyrelle casts aside the arrogant belief that she must carry this burden alone, resolving to walk beside the Wanderer into whatever harrowing fate awaits. Vessel of Hatred cold-bloodedly demonstrates the terrifying magnitude of a Prime Evil against individual willpower, serving as a critical bridge toward an inevitable final confrontation.

DLC: Lord of Hatred (2026)

The fleeting respite purchased by Akarat’s noble sacrifice was merely a prelude to the abyss. Serving as the grand culmination of the Diablo saga, this chapter depicts the ultimate battle for Sanctuary’s fate against Mephisto, who has shattered the bonds of the Soulstone to reveal his true form as the “Lord of Hatred.” Mephisto’s resurrection is no mere demonic return; it signifies a dimensional collapse, reshaping the mortal realm of Sanctuary itself into his domain of hatred. The ruined sanctuaries of Travincal and the once-glorious Eastern empires fracture open, connecting directly to the abyssal depths of Hell. Flames of malice and rivers of blood burst from the shattered earth beneath skies dyed in sinister crimson. Humanity descends into paranoia, trapped in an endless cycle of slaughter—a horrifying realization of Mephisto’s ultimate vision for Hell on Earth.

Young scholar Neyrelle has long passed the threshold of her physical and mental endurance, a grim toll paid for carrying the Soulstone. Yet, in a heroic act of defiance, she leverages the residual embers of Mephisto’s hatred lingering within her, volunteering to serve as a living compass to guide the Wanderer into the heart of the enemy’s realm. As the Wanderer protects the fading Neyrelle, they unlock forbidden Horadric arts and the forgotten legacy of the ancient Nephalem, awakening a primal power capable of transcending both angel and demon. Amidst this desperate struggle, ominous signs emerge hinting at the silent return of the other Prime Evils—Diablo, the Lord of Terror, and Baal, the Lord of Destruction—gradually unveiling a grander conspiracy at the very core of the franchise.

The final confrontation unfolds at the Throne of Hatred—a warped conceptual space where the boundary between Sanctuary and Hell has completely dissolved. Mephisto weaponizes memories of past conflicts and trauma, attempting to shatter the Wanderer’s mind from within; yet the Wanderer stands firm, embodying the unyielding free will of humanity. At the climax of a ruthless duel, the Wanderer, channeling the lingering residue of Neyrelle’s soul, delivers a decisive strike that shatters Mephisto’s essence beyond the dimensions. Though the defeat of the Lord of Hatred narrowly snatches Sanctuary from the brink of total ruin, expelling a Prime Evil from the framework of reality creates an irreversible crack in the cosmic balance linking High Heavens, Burning Hells, and Sanctuary. Ultimately, this story serves as a profound declaration of humanity’s departure from the chessboard of angels and demons, while ushering in the chaos of an unknown dimension—leaving readers and players alike with deep philosophical questions to ponder.
