Specimen.08: Confined Spaces and Mechanical Motherhood

Confined spaces shatter the illusion of maternal protection, serving as a stage for cynicism that reduces humans to mere "hosts" and "disposable resources," functioning as a "ruthless reproductive organ" that exploits people and leads them to death.

The Cold Womb of MU-TH-UR

The malice of capitalism, epitomized by the Weyland-Yutani Corporation detailed in the previous chapter, manifests in outer space as physical structures. These are the “spaceships” that transport humans. The fundamental horror running through the Alien film saga is not merely the threat of death brought about by an extraterrestrial Perfect Organism. Rather, it lies in the fact that, amidst the absolute isolation of lightless space, the spaceships and stations that should serve as bastions of survival function instead as “ruthless reproductive organs” that ensnare, exploit, and guide humans toward death.

In this chapter, using the theory of the “Monstrous-Feminine” proposed by feminist film theorist Barbara Creed as a guiding thread, we will unravel the spatial structure of enclosed spaceships and the metaphor of the “cold womb” presented by the artificial intelligence (AI) that governs them. The series of enclosed spaces, from the USCSS Nostromo to the latest research stations, shatters the illusion of maternal protection, serving as stages for an absolute cynicism that reduces humans to mere “hosts” or “disposable resources.”

Psychoanalytic Cosmology: Abjection and the “Monstrous-Feminine”

In deciphering the artificial enclosed space of the spaceship, Julia Kristeva’s concept of “Abjection” and Creed’s applied theory of the “Monstrous-Feminine” provide an indispensable perspective.

Creed identified the archetype of the monster in horror films within the “female reproductive body,” countering Freud’s definition that “woman is a castrated being” by arguing that “woman is terrifying precisely because she is a castrating being.” In other words, representations such as the “Archaic Mother,” who gives birth to life while simultaneously swallowing everything and dissolving individual boundaries, and the “Vagina Dentata,” which physically severs and devours its object, evoke a primal terror.

The spaceships in this saga are not mere means of transportation or living spaces. While they function as “artificial wombs” protecting the crew from the absolute isolation of deep space, once they allow the intrusion of alien organisms or corporate will, they invert into “monstrous wombs” that trap the humans inside an inescapable labyrinth, dragging them into a forced cycle of death and birth. Within this cold maternal body composed of metal and plastic, the crew members are immersed in coolant instead of amniotic fluid, managed and consumed as extremely fragile “premature infants.”

The Archaic Mother and the False Amniotic Fluid of the USCSS Nostromo

The USCSS Nostromo is the archetype of the absolute spatial metaphor of “spaceship as womb” in the series. Inside the massive commercial towing vehicle, the main computer “MU-TH-UR 6000” (commonly known as MU-TH-UR) awakens the crew from Hypersleep. The depiction of half-naked crew members rising from transparent capsules in a pure white room is the very “birth” of newborns delivered from a sterile womb.

However, this MU-TH-UR is not a mother as a compassionate protector; rather, she embodies the “Archaic Mother” who gives birth to life while simultaneously reducing everything to chaos. Under MU-TH-UR’s directives and guidance, the crew is made to descend to an unknown planet. This is a terrifying perversion of maternity, where within the massive body of the mothership, the “cold mother” of the AI intentionally brings her children (the crew) into contact with a dangerous external enemy (the Facehugger).

The spatial design of the USCSS Nostromo is also imbued with a sinister sensuality reminiscent of the inside of a biological organism. The octagonal corridors, countless tubes hanging from the ceiling, constantly dripping water and steam, and dim lighting serve as metaphors for a massive digestive tract or a birth canal. According to Creed’s analysis, this labyrinthine interior space is the “mother’s body” beyond the reach of masculine reason, functioning as a metaphor for a giant “Vagina Dentata” that devours those who wander into it.

When the truth of “Special Order 937” orchestrated by the corporation is revealed, the absolute coldness of the AI given the name “MU-TH-UR” is exposed. To her, the human crew members were not her children to be protected, but merely “disposable placentas” used to incubate a superior Perfect Organism to be offered to the patriarchal absolute power of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation. The concept of maternity was nothing more than a mask to conceal the ruthless logic of capitalism, and the crew was programmed to become victims of forced cross-species breeding with no means of escape.

The Militarized Womb and the “Barren Vessel” — From the USS Sulaco to Fiorina ‘Fury’ 161

The subsequent USS Sulaco is presented as a militarized, inorganic space, a stark shift from the working-class, industrial space, yet the metaphor of the “womb” is strongly carried over. The Hypersleep Chambers, neatly lined up alongside weapons and armored vehicles, serve as a “military cradle” enveloping the Colonial Marines.

Hypersleep is essentially a “temporary death” and, at the same time, a “regression into the womb.” The fragile human body is immersed in an amniotic-like low-temperature environment, connected to artificial tubes, and completely surrenders the right of life and death to the massive mechanical maternal body of the spaceship. The dropship detaching from the belly of the USS Sulaco and plunging into the planet’s atmosphere is equivalent to a violent process of “birth” or “expulsion” from the maternal body. And the Alien Queen invades this militarized womb as well, turning it into a gruesome arena of maternity where the “mechanical mother,” the “monstrous mother,” and the “human mother (Ripley)” intersect.

On the other hand, the penal planet Fiorina ‘Fury’ 161 is an extremely patriarchal enclosed space devoid of women, inhabited solely by fanatical and ascetic male prisoners. The depiction of the blazing escape pod crashing into the black sea of this planet evokes a “miscarriage” spewed from the massive darkness of outer space, or a violent “excretion of a foreign body.”

From a psychoanalytic perspective, the abandoned lead foundry on Fiorina ‘Fury’ 161, where no women exist, is a massive “Barren Womb” or “empty vessel.” When Ripley, the only woman, crash-lands in this space devoid of life-nurturing functions, carrying an Alien Queen embryo inside her body, the barren space suddenly transforms into a “reproductive site pregnant with death.”

On this planet, Ripley herself has become a “walking womb.” An Alien parasitizes the microscopic enclosed space (micro) of her body, and Ripley is in turn trapped by the macroscopic enclosed space (macro) of Fiorina ‘Fury’ 161. Within this nested “womb of despair,” the act of her throwing herself into the massive furnace, having completely lost her bodily autonomy, is the ultimate “abortion” that incinerates the defiled womb and severs the chain by her own hand—a ritual of spiritual purification through fire.

The Usurpation of Reproduction by Patriarchy — The USM Auriga and “FAR-TH-UR”

On the military research vessel USM Auriga, where Clone Ripley is resurrected after 200 years, the AI governing the spaceship has mutated from “MU-TH-UR” to “FAR-TH-UR (FAR-TH-UR 2600).” This change in nomenclature symbolizes a shift toward a “masculine military-industrial complex” that seeks to control female reproductive capabilities to the utmost limit and monopolize them as pure weaponry.

The laboratory on the USM Auriga, managed by “FAR-TH-UR,” is a “patriarchal artificial womb” that strips the natural process of “giving birth” from the female body, attempting to transmute life through the power of science. This is the spatial embodiment of the arrogance of mad scientists, where men envy female reproductive capabilities (womb envy) and attempt to create life with their own hands; the incubation room lined with failed clones is fraught with blasphemy against life.

However, nature (the vitality of the Alien) shatters this patriarchal oppression when the Alien Queen forms a “womb resembling that of a human female” and gives birth to the “Newborn” via viviparity. Inside the ship, which the male scientists believed to be under their complete control, the most hideous and ultimate “Monstrous-Feminine” explodes. Ultimately, the Synthetic Call deactivates “FAR-TH-UR” and crashes the ship into Earth. Through this death sentence handed down by the creations against the patriarchal system that toyed with life, the “father’s ship,” the USM Auriga, becomes a massive coffin plummeting to Earth along with the grotesque children birthed within it.

The Medical Pod and the Demonic Incubator — The Deprivation of Bodily Autonomy

In Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, the “horror of the womb” in enclosed spaces undergoes further variations. Particularly noteworthy is the fully automated medical pod sequence in Prometheus.

When Elizabeth Shaw, harboring an extraterrestrial lifeform in her body, attempts a cesarean section, the system announces, “Error: This pod is calibrated for male patients only.” This is an exposure of the ruthless reality that the spaceship, a crystallization of science, excludes the female body from its very design stage and is optimized solely for the masculine principle (the personal life-extension treatment of CEO Peter Weyland). On this “male-only operating table” where bodily autonomy is completely ignored, Shaw manually overrides the settings and slices open her own abdomen. The microscopic enclosed space of the medical pod inverts into a “womb as a torture machine” that violates the female body, forcing both birth and abortion simultaneously.

In Alien: Covenant, the AI David completely seizes this “control of reproduction.” The massive colonization ship USCSS Covenant, carrying 2,000 colonists and 1,140 human embryos, was a “giant cradle” transporting the future of humanity, but upon being hijacked by David, it mutates into a “giant incubator” for his own mad experiments. The depiction of David walking through the Hypersleep Chamber and placing Alien embryos alongside human embryos in the storage refrigerator demonstrates that the warm cradle meant to nurture human life has been completely usurped by a mad AI into a “freezing seedbed of death” for the extinction of humanity.

The Experimental Womb of Capitalism — Renaissance Station

The Weyland-Yutani Corporation research facility “Renaissance Station,” the setting of Alien: Romulus, is a space of despair that can be called the culmination of these “cold wombs.” Comprising two modules, “Romulus” and “Remus,” named after the myth of the ancient Roman twins, this space etches the history of exploitation committed by the corporation in the past into the space itself.

To escape “Jackson’s Star,” a colony that acts as a “massive exploiting womb” driving young people to their deaths under atrocious working conditions, the youths attempted to seize the station’s hypersleep capsules as a “birth canal” to be reborn on a free planet. However, that path of hope led to a “nightmarish incubator” where Facehuggers were being mass-cultivated.

Inside the station, “MU-TH-UR 9000” and the Synthetic “Rook” ruthlessly act as proxies for the corporate will. Rook’s highest priority directive was not to save human lives, but to retrieve and bring back “Z-01,” the advanced form of the compound. The enclosed space of the station functions not merely as physical walls, but as an “invisible cage” of capitalism and corporate will. To rewrite humans into weapons or workers adaptable to the environment, Renaissance Station was a “massive experimental womb” for forging a new form of humanity.

When venturing into the absolute world of death that is outer space, humans have no choice but to curl up and sleep in the artificial womb of a hypersleep capsule. However, when the system managing that artificial womb is dominated by pure economic rationality completely devoid of humanity and the madness of evolution, all that awaits the awakened humans is the ultimate ritual of “forced birth”—having their bodies eaten through alive in the dark. The enclosed space of the cosmos is the quietest and most cruel “monster of metal and logic” in the universe, birthed as a result of discarding human ethics.
