Specimen.01: The Creator's Malice and the Primordial Soup

The malice of the Creators who viewed humanity as a contaminant to be eliminated. They destroyed themselves, and only the "primordial soup" that irreversibly transforms the ecosystem awaits the heat of a new host in the darkness of space.

Engineers and the “Black Goo”

On the moon LV-223, where the USCSS Prometheus landed in search of the origins of humanity, and on Planet 4, where the USCSS Covenant drifted ashore over a decade later, we finally confront our creators. The species, once discovered as a fossil in the abyss of space and called the “Space Jockey,” were the “Engineers”—beings who constructed a cosmic-scale ecosystem by seeding their own DNA onto primordial planets.

However, what awaited at the end of this quest was not an encounter with benevolent gods, but the cold figures of creators who viewed us merely as experimental subjects or pollutants to be eradicated. Why did they create us, and why did they attempt to destroy us with their own hands? In this chapter, we will focus on the psychological structure of the “Engineers,” the creators of humanity, and the full picture of the “Black Goo” they wield, exploring the source of absolute despair.

The Anatomy of the Creators and the Myth of Biomechanics

The physical characteristics of the Engineers, while resembling humanity, possess an overwhelming transcendence and ruthlessness. Standing at approximately 10.36 feet (about 3.14 meters) tall, veins pulse beneath their completely hairless, translucent pale skin. Most characteristic of all are their “dead, pitch-black eyes” with cross-shaped pupils. Although their DNA structure perfectly matches that of humanity, their bodies reign over us, looking down upon us as the perfected form of ultimate evolution.

However, the true terror they bring lies not in their physical bodies themselves, but in the technology of “Biomechanics” they wear. The Engineers discovered on LV-223 were clad in armored suits equipped with elephant trunk-like respirators; these were not mere spacesuits, but possessed the properties of an exoskeleton organically integrated with their flesh. Their spacecraft (the Juggernaut) is also an inorganic machine capable of interstellar travel, despite its organic, asymmetrical U-shaped (wishbone) design reminiscent of bones and internal organs.

Particularly noteworthy is the piloting system of the Juggernaut. A viscous memory gel is secreted on the instrument panel, and the pilot plays a “flute”-like instrument, activating the massive mechanical weapon through the artistic and biological act of music. Here, the “loss of boundaries between self and other” in psychoanalysis is depicted in an extremely sensual and sinister manner. The boundaries between subject (pilot) and object (spacecraft), organic (flesh) and inorganic (machine) ambiguously dissolve, and the outline of the self assimilates with cosmic technology. This is nothing less than a manifestation of Thanatos (Death Drive) on a cosmic scale, where individual consciousness is reduced to a part of a massive system.

The social structure of the Engineers emerges as a torn duality possessed by the creators when comparing the two environments presented in the films. While LV-223 was a “biological weapons testing ground” with Juggernauts and massive storage facilities for the Black Goo located beneath a giant pyramidal temple, the inhabitants of Planet 4 lived a primitive and religious life, wearing simple robes in a city with a vast plaza and stone temples, thoroughly concealing mechanical technology.

These metaphorically represent the psychological breakdown of the creators who, as a result of producing excessive technology (the Black Goo), lost sight of their own raison d’être and regressed into asceticism. Despite being gods who rule the cosmos, they are imperfect beings who were terrified by the madness they created and were forced to bifurcate their society.

The Black Goo: The “Primordial Soup” of Creation and Destruction and Abjection

Symbolizing the civilization of the Engineers and simultaneously shaking the bioethics of this saga to its core is what is commonly known as the “Black Goo.” Later referred to as the “Prometheus Strain” by Rook, a scientist of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation, and with its further extracted and refined strain called “Z-01,” this substance (scientific name: Plagiarus praepotens) is neither a mere poison nor a weapon. It is a “primordial soup” that violently rewrites the blueprints of life and irreversibly transforms entire ecosystems.

This “Chemical A0-3959X.91-15” is an amorphous organic compound consisting of millions of microscopic microorganisms, behaving as a single parasitic entity as a whole. The greatest characteristic of this liquid lies in its ability to simultaneously trigger “complete deconstruction” and “explosive reconstruction.”

Borrowing the concept of “Abjection” from Julia Kristeva’s psychoanalytic theory, the Black Goo is the ultimate “Abject” (that which transgresses boundaries). This viscous Black Goo mercilessly dissolves the boundaries between self and other, inside and outside, life and death—the very lines humanity has built to maintain sanity. It functions to drag humans down from being subjects to “mere lumps of flesh (objects).”

The effects of the liquid yield cruelly diverse results depending on the form of exposure. When exposed to the atmosphere, or when poured onto a subject in high concentrations, the liquid instantly destroys animal proteins, breaking down cells and tissues to the molecular level. On the other hand, when ingested in trace amounts, or when it bonds with the DNA of a specific host, it completely rewrites the host’s genetics, mutating them into an extremely aggressive and highly resilient parasitic organism (abomination). When Dr. Holloway ingested a single drop of the liquid mixed into his drink, he experienced abnormal sexual arousal, eventually tasting the terror of a gradual loss of self as countless microorganisms began to writhe behind the corneas of his eyes. Furthermore, the geologist Fifield, who came into direct contact with the liquid, completely lost his human reason and transformed into a grotesque monster with astonishing physical and regenerative abilities. These instances thrust upon us the reality that our bodies are never the firm property of the “I,” but merely unstable matter that can be rewritten by foreign entities at any moment.

The philosophical core of this Black Goo is encapsulated in the tragic ritual of genesis depicted on a primordial planet, presumed to be Earth. An Engineer drinks the Black Goo atop a waterfall; his body is darkly eroded, disintegrating at the cellular level as he falls into the basin below. His completely unzipped DNA recombines in the water, becoming the origin of life on Earth (and by extension, humanity). It is the cruel truth that life is born not through a Christian “creation from nothing” or “creation through love,” but only through “self-sacrifice and deconstruction” that tears apart one’s own flesh. In the abyss of humanity’s flesh and blood, the memory of this creator’s suicidal act and the cellular disintegration caused by the Black Goo is etched as original sin.

Psychoanalysis of the Silent Temple: The Ampule Room and the Giant Head Statue

Within the pyramidal ruins of LV-223 and the temple structures of Planet 4, there exist highly symbolic architectural styles for deciphering the psychological world of the Engineers. These are the “Ampule Room” and the “Hall of Heads.”

In the sealed room discovered by the crew of the USCSS Prometheus on LV-223, thousands of ampules made of steatite (soapstone) were arranged in an orderly fashion, and at the back of the room sat a massive stone head statue (monolith) modeled after a human face. According to Jacques Lacan’s psychoanalytic theory, this giant head statue symbolizes the “Name-of-the-Father (Nom-du-Père)“—that is, absolute law and order, and cosmic reason. The “head,” possessing no body and dominating the space solely with its cold gaze, is nothing less than the embodiment of pure Logos (reason and knowledge).

At the feet of this head symbolizing reason, countless containers of the “Black Goo”—the seeds of ultimate chaos and physical destruction—are spread out. This gruesome contradiction itself demonstrates the limitations and self-deception of the Engineer species. They postured as “gods of reason” managing the universe, flaunting their authority through giant stone statues, yet in reality, they were beings incapable of achieving anything without relying on the maternal and fluid violence of “uncontrollable biological chaos.”

Furthermore, the most poetic and cruel mechanism in the Ampule Room of LV-223 is hidden in the “activation condition” of the Black Goo. The moment the crew enters the room, confirms their safety, removes their helmets, and breathes a sigh of relief, droplets (vitriol) appear on the surface of the ampules in reaction to the water vapor (or carbon dioxide) in human breath, and the Black Goo begins to ooze from within. The “breath of life (respiration)” itself ironically becomes the trigger that activates the “process of absolute death and destruction.” It is a perfect metaphor for cosmological pessimism, where human survival activity itself awakens terror, and the very will to live invites death.

The Malice of the Creators and the Laius Complex

Approximately 2,000 years ago, the Engineers on LV-223 loaded multiple Juggernauts with the Black Goo and were about to take off for Earth. Their objective was the “dropping of the Black Goo” upon humanity—the very beings they had supposedly sacrificed themselves to create—which meant complete mass genocide.

Why did they attempt to destroy humanity? It is highly appropriate to interpret this through the “Laius Complex” in Freudian psychoanalysis (the psychology of a father attempting to murder his son first, out of fear that the son will usurp his throne and kill him). Perhaps the creators feared their superiority was threatened when humanity showed signs of developing its own technology. Humanity, possessing DNA identical to their own, would eventually become a “shadow” threatening them over the dominion of the universe. Driven by this primal fear, they decided to wipe the slate clean on Earth.

However, their military operation ended in failure before departure due to a leak of the liquid in their own facility, or a rebellion by the monsters spawned from it. The gods were consumed by the flames of punishment they themselves created, annihilated in a lonely corner of the universe. The malice of the creators destroyed them through the fragility born of being too perfect.

The Ouroboric Cycle of the Xenomorph and the Black Goo

There exists a paradox that has long been a subject of debate in the saga: “Did the Engineers create the Xenomorph from the Black Goo?” or “Was the Black Goo extracted from the Xenomorph?” A mural in the Ampule Room on LV-223 already depicts a Xenomorph-like entity divinely, like a crucified savior, suggesting that it was an object of worship.

This profound mystery receives a chilling answer through the fact that a research team, including the Synthetic Rook, a scientist of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation, successfully extracted and refined the Black Goo “Chemical A0-3959X.91-15” directly from the corpse of the original Xenomorph (Big Chap), creating the evolutionary drug “Z-01” (Prometheus Strain). In other words, the conclusion is that “the true nature of the Black Goo is the very DNA essence of the Perfect Organism (Xenomorph) that has existed in the universe since the primordial era.”

From this perspective, the true history of the Engineers is reconstructed as a chilling cycle. In ancient times, they encountered and worshipped the perfected “Perfect Organism,” extracted the “Black Goo” from it, and attempted to use it for military purposes, but lost control and were ruined. Then, thousands of years later, humanity in turn extracts the Black Goo from the Xenomorph in the same way, attempting to use it for their own evolution, only to invite gruesome ruin.

Here lies the circular structure of the Ouroboros, with no beginning and no end. Both Engineers and humans alike attempt to master the “power of God,” only to be swallowed by its violent adaptability instead. Nihilism is completed here: the Xenomorph is the sole absolute being in the universe, and all other intelligent lifeforms are merely “temporary catalysts” or “nourishment” in the process of evolution and proliferation.

The Engineers, the creators, have already perished, consumed by their own hellfire, and only the soup of destruction they left behind waits eagerly in the darkness of space for the warmth of a new host. Human intelligence and civilization are nothing more than a drop of carbon stain before this Black Goo. And this theme of “rebellion against and usurpation of God” by the created will eventually be carried over into an even bloodier dimension by a single artificial intelligence created by humanity.
