Vol.10: Mavuika (Pyro Archon) - "War" and Resurrection. The Harsh Rules of Natlan and the Philosophy of Those Who Inherit the Will of Flame

A lonely flame of 500 years, risking memories and love. The Pyro Archon Mavuika, who offered herself as kindling, and Il Capitano, who shattered fate by turning a divine curse to his advantage. An ultimate hymn of humanity piercing the False Sky and rising from the ashes.

Located in the southwest of the continent of Teyvat, the Pyro nation of Natlan is a land filled with ceaseless conflict and the power of life born from the ashes. This article unravels the history of the Pyro Archon Mavuika and the Natlan she rules, the metaphysical system of “resurrection,” and the true philosophical significance inherent in the concept of “war.”

The story of Natlan goes beyond a mere physical struggle between good and evil. It is a metaphysical battle between “memory” and “oblivion,” and a record of humanity’s fiercest rebellion against predetermined fate—namely, the “False Sky” in Gnosticism. This article synthesizes the events of the in-game Archon Quests, the ancient texts hidden within the artifacts “Obsidian Codex” and “Hero of Cinder City,” and the lore of the weapon “Ode of a Thousand Dawns.” Furthermore, from the perspectives of the conflict between the Demiurge and the true light in Gnosticism, “Rubedo” (reddening) as the final stage of alchemy, and comparative mythology such as Mayan and Maori myths, it analyzes the existence of a single human named Mavuika and the full scope of a grand plan that deceives the world.

1. The Myth of Genesis: The Transition from the Rule of Dragons to the Dawn of Humanity

To understand the 500-year plan devised by Mavuika and the unique laws of present-day Natlan, it is necessary to trace back to the fundamental origins of Natlan and the relationship between humanity and the “Sovereign Dragons,” the old rulers of Teyvat. Compared to the other six nations of Teyvat, Natlan is a land with extremely fragile Ley Lines, and thus possessed the fatal weakness of being the most susceptible to the erosion of The Abyss.

1.1 The Sage of Stolen Flame and the Blasphemous Experiment of “Evolution”

The text of the artifact “Obsidian Codex” recounts that in the era when the envoys of the gods (the messengers of Celestia) fell into the lightless realm, the surviving vishaps were under the protection of the one who ruled over flames, the Pyro Dragon Lord Xbalanque (Wait, Xbalanque is the first Pyro Archon. The text says “シウコアトル” Xiucoatl). Correction: the Pyro Dragon Lord Xiucoatl. However, the wisdom of the dragons was gradually stolen by the muddied darkness (the power of The Abyss), leaving behind only rule by violence.

The one who coldly observed this ruinous cycle of history was Kukulkan, the “Sage of Stolen Flame.” Despite being the wisest of dragons, he abandoned the folly of his brethren, stole the “primordial spark (Phlogiston)” from the ancient palace beneath the magma, and bestowed it upon humanity, who were still weak beings at the time. The Sage’s objective was a blasphemous experiment of “evolution”—to fuse the power of dragons with the souls of humans, creating a new ruler to govern both worlds. The hero Chaac, who received the fire from him, founded the first tribe, but as humanity began to use fire to slaughter their own kind, the Sage temporarily disappeared from the center stage of history to continue his observation from the void.

This Sage’s actions encompass the motif of Prometheus, who gave fire to humanity in Greek mythology, but are based on a more ruthless evolutionary determinism. He prophesied that “the slaves of today will become the rulers of tomorrow,” intending the selection of the strong through natural selection.

1.2 The Rise of Xbalanque and the Contract with Ronova, the Shade of Death

However, rising beyond the Sage’s predictions was Xbalanque (Ancient Name: Kiongozi / Demon Name: Haborym), who would become the first Pyro Archon of Natlan. Deriving his name from the twin hero gods of the Popol Vuh in Mayan mythology, he pacified the tribes despite being an “outsider” who belonged to neither the Sage’s plans nor any prophecies.

Xbalanque engaged in a mortal struggle with the Pyro Dragon Lord Xiucoatl at the great volcano of Tollan, and after a battle that dyed the sky black, he struck down the Dragon Lord. At this time, the Dragon Lord’s eyes were divided into two “Golden Wishes” capable of activating the “Array of Huitzilopochtli,” a weapon that could destroy Natlan. With Xbalanque and Kukulkan, the Sage of Stolen Flame, each holding one, an inviolable oath of peace was forged between dragons and humans.

Immediately after the subjugation of the Dragon Lord, appearing before Xbalanque, who had resurrected from the flames, was the “Master of Death,” Ronova, one of the Four Shades of The Heavenly Principles. Ronova presented Xbalanque with an illusion of a harsh future where Natlan would eventually be swallowed by The Abyss. To save Natlan, Xbalanque made a deal with Ronova, using his Divine Throne as collateral, and borrowed her power (the authority of death). Through this, Natlan’s unique systems were established: the “Ode of Resurrection,” the “Pilgrimage of the Return of the Sacred Flame,” and the rule that “a mortal human ascends to the throne of the Pyro Archon and inherits the memories.”

2. The Night Kingdom and the Metaphysics of the “Ode of Resurrection”

The concepts of “life and death” in Natlan are fundamentally different from other regions of Teyvat. In Natlan, where the Ley Lines are fragile, after the physical body perishes, the soul and memories do not naturally return to Irminsul, but are preserved in a special spiritual realm called the “Night Kingdom.”

2.1 The “Night Kingdom” as a Cloud Server and the Love of the Seelies

In community theories, it has been pointed out that the Night Kingdom has a structure closer to a “cloud server” that preserves and manages the souls, memories, and identities of the people of Natlan, rather than an afterlife, and this perfectly aligns with the metaphysical depictions in the game. The one who created this realm was Yohualtecuhtin, the “God of the Night,” a survivor of the race once called “angels” who later devolved into Seelies.

The angels (Seelies) were a race that harbored deep love for humanity. The Night Kingdom is Natlan’s unique backup system replacing the network of Irminsul, constructed through the secret guidance of Ronova and the self-sacrificing love of Yohualtecuhtin. It is precisely because of this system that the warriors of Natlan could throw themselves into the “Night Warden Wars,” the endless battle against The Abyss. Even if they fall in the abyss, as long as their memories and souls are saved as data in the Night Kingdom, it is possible to “reconstruct (download)” them, physical body and all, back into the physical world through the power of the Pyro Archon.

2.2 The Ode of Resurrection and the Folkloric Significance of Swahili Incantations

The “Ode of Resurrection” is a resurrection ritual performed at the Stadium of the Sacred Flame. The absolute condition for this ritual to succeed is that at least one member of the fallen warrior’s team must “emerge victorious and return alive.” If they are defeated and completely wiped out, their story (memories) is cut off from the path to the Night Kingdom and is lost forever (turned to ash).

During the ritual, the people of Natlan bow their heads and sing a choir composed of Swahili chants.

  • Hadithi yaendelea (The tale continues on)
  • Heshima warithi vizazi (Glory passed through generations)
  • Ushujaa waangaza mbingu na ardhi (Courage ignites the sky and earth)
  • Mara ya tena mwangani (Once again, once again, burn bright!)

The introduction of African Swahili culture (and partially Mayan/Aztec culture) into the names of the music and rituals emphasizes Natlan’s themes of “tribal solidarity” and “the inheritance of memories through oral tradition.” In Natlan, death is not the perishing of the physical body but “oblivion,” and life is synonymous with “the story being passed down.” The law that only the victors burn bright while the defeated turn to ash is the harsh price for maintaining memories.

2.3 Ancient Names and the Inheritance of Fate

Ancient Names act like IP addresses connecting the souls preserved in the Night Kingdom to the real world, or like anchors of fate. Bestowed upon warriors chosen by the Wayob, these obsidian inscriptions are engraved with the wills and memories of past owners. While a Vision resonates with an individual’s “strong ambition,” an Ancient Name can be said to be the crystallization of “the collective will and memories over 500 years.”

CharacterAncient Name (Swahili Origin)MeaningSymbolized Virtue / Historical Role
Mavuika / XbalanqueKiongoziLeaderLeadership. The proof of the Pyro Archon and leader, the one who guides the entire army.
XilonenBarakaBlessingGrace. The one who brings the protection of the earth and forging.
OroronBidiiDevotionLoyalty. The one who does not shy away from self-sacrifice for others or a great cause.
KinichMalipoTurnfirePrice/Retribution. The one who takes on the hellfire and settles karma.

IansanUwezoPowerMight. Pure martial prowess and breakthrough power.
ChascaVukaTranscensionFlight/Overcoming. The one who surpasses limits and dances in the sky.

The loss of an Ancient Name means that the soul is completely erased from the Night Kingdom. The erosion by The Abyss is not mere physical destruction, but nothing less than the act of hacking this “cloud server” and fundamentally destroying and altering the data of people’s identities and memories.

3. Mavuika’s 500-Year Plan: Existential Sacrifice and the Completion of Rubedo

The current Pyro Archon, Mavuika, is not a transcendent lifeform born as a god. She is a mortal “human” who lived during the era of the disaster of Khaenri’ah (The Cataclysm) 500 years ago. At that time, Natlan was in a state of devastation due to the invasion of The Abyss, the power of the Wayob was failing, and civilization was on the verge of death. According to Mavuika’s calculations, if left as is, the Night Kingdom was destined to be completely swallowed by The Abyss within 500 years.

3.1 Self-Sacrifice to the Sacred Flame and the 500-Year Leap

After consulting with the heroes of that time, Mavuika devised an extremely ruthless and grand plan. It was to buy “500 years” of time as a grace period for each tribe to recover from the damage of The Abyss and regain their strength. And Mavuika herself would cast her own life into the “Sacred Flame,” to be incarnated (resurrected) again 500 years later and take command of the decisive battle.

Her true strength does not stem from the transcendence of a divine persona. It is because, despite being human, she overcame the fear of death and demonstrated the “zenith of human will” by burning herself as firewood. She defines herself not as a savior, but as a “proxy” for the history passed down by her predecessors. The lore of her signature claymore, “O
