Totem.00: Plot Summary of Inception
Inception (2010)
Dom Cobb is the ultimate specialist in a unique criminal field known as “Extraction,” which involves infiltrating the dreams (Subconscious) of others to steal classified information from the depths of their Unconscious. Accused of driving his beloved wife, Mal, to suicide, he has become an international fugitive unable to return to the United States, living a life on the run, separated from his two beloved children.
Saito, the head of a massive energy corporation, approaches Cobb with a deal: he will use his immense power to erase Cobb’s criminal record and help him return to his children. The condition is to successfully execute an extremely difficult mission called “Inception”—not stealing information from someone’s mind, but planting a new idea into the deepest depths of a Target’s Subconscious.
The Target is Robert Fischer, the heir to Saito’s rival corporation, who is about to inherit a vast empire from his cold-hearted father. To compel him to voluntarily make the decision to dismantle his father’s company and forge his own path, Cobb assembles a team of specialists. These include his pragmatic partner Arthur; Ariadne, a brilliant young Architect who constructs dream spaces as labyrinths; Eames, a Forger who disguises himself as others to manipulate the Target’s emotions; and Yusuf, a chemist who formulates a powerful sedative to induce deep sleep. The team puts Fischer to sleep on a flight from Sydney to Los Angeles and initiates Shared Dreaming.
The plan is to guide Fischer into a three-Level labyrinth—a dream within a “Dream within a dream”—and induce Catharsis deep within his mind. However, immediately after infiltrating Level 1 (a rainy cityscape), they encounter fierce resistance from Fischer’s militarized Subconscious, leaving Saito mortally wounded. Because they are under the influence of the powerful sedative, dying in the dream will not wake them in reality; instead, they will fall into “Limbo,” the lowest tier of the Subconscious where time is infinitely stretched out, plunging them into a desperate situation.
Unable to turn back, the team proceeds deeper into the Levels. After deceiving Fischer’s self-defense mechanisms in Level 2 (a hotel), they reach Level 3 (a snow mountain fortress). However, the maddened Shadow of Cobb’s wife, Mal, leaking from his Subconscious, sabotages the operation and shoots Fischer dead. The reason Cobb is tormented by Mal’s phantom is due to an indelible guilt: he had once performed the original Inception on Mal’s mind, planting the idea that “this world is not real,” which ultimately caused her to leap to her death in the real world.
To complete the operation, Cobb and Ariadne descend into Limbo. Cobb finally confronts his guilt and lets go of Mal’s phantom. Rescued from Limbo, Fischer finds a childhood keepsake—a pinwheel—in the Level 3 vault, achieving a Catharsis that “his father wanted him to forge his own path,” and the Inception is a success. While the teammates return to the upper Levels via a “Kick” (an awakening cue), Cobb remains alone in the lowest Level to rescue Saito, who was left behind in Limbo. Decades pass, and meeting Saito, who has become an elderly man, Cobb reminds him of their promise, and they return together to the real world.
Waking up on the flight to Los Angeles, Cobb passes through immigration control with Saito’s help and finally arrives at his home. He spins his totem (a spinning top) on the table to verify if it is reality, but without waiting to see the result, he runs to his children who turn around to greet him. Just as the spinning top wobbles slightly, the story ends.
